New Alpha Release, Version 1.00A
After many months of restless coding and debugging, we are finally delivering a new alpha release, the CryptoMail Email System (CMES) 1.00A. Becoming one of the major milestones of our organization, this alpha version was officially released during our DefCon 12 presentation.
The most important enhancement in the CMES 1.00A, is the integration with the most secure, accepted and reliable encryption scheme, PGP. From this version of the CMES on, all email messages kept in the server will be using PGP to protect the contents. Users will create their own PGP keypairs, and have the ability to use others’ PGP public keys to exchange their emails.
One of the most noticeable new features in the CMES 1.00A is a key management panel that allows you to view and post PGP public keys into your account, so you will be able to send an email outside your domain using PGP. If you are sending to a recipient at the same domain, the system will obtain the recipient’s PGP public key from the server’s database. When you want to send an email outside your domain, you post the recipient’s PGP public key into your account using the key management tool, and then the CMES’s JavaApplet client will encrypt the message with the key, and send it to the intended recipient. The next time you send to that same recipient, the CMES will automatically use that key for you.
In addition to changing the message format, we have developed many other enhancements in the JavaApplet client, and in the installation. Just to name a few, the client will allow you to sort email messages. You can sort messages in the message view pane by clicking on the appropriate button header. For system administrators, the improved installation will make setting up and running the system an ease. We also enriched the documentation in the source code to allow other developers to comprehend all the new developments.
Since the release of the alpha version, several people have tried the alpha version in their day-to-day working environments to allow their own groups to communicate. We are deeply indebted to them for trying out the new system, and giving such great feedback. If you are considering having your own CMES to serve your group, please contact Joshua, [joshuat at cryptomail.org].
Con, Con and More Con
During the last few months, we were on the road and giving presentations about our CryptoMail Email System at the LayerOne 2004, the HOPE 2004 and the DefCon 12 conferences. Beside more than hundreds of people coming to our presentation, we received the sincerest welcome from the hosts.
Although the LayerOne 2004 is the first hacker conference in the Los Angles area, the conference is already gaining great attention from some major Internet journalists. They introduced us to wide audience around the Internet world.
As you might know, the HOPE is the largest hacker conference in the east. Even though we gave our talk in Saturday morning, unexpectedly, many people attended to our talk, and we have explored their recommendations and appreciated their input into the CMES.
One of the major milestones of our organization was presenting at the DefCon12 conference. It gave us the opportunity to reveal our newest release of the CMES to a large audience. Not only was our message and presentation well received, but we had the pleasure to be invited to the DefCon12 amazing after conference party.
In conclusion, we are pleased to have been invited to the LayerOne, the HOPE and the DefCon conferences. Each of the conferences is special and unique in their own way. Our message has reached the audience that we intended to reach, and we’d like to give our deepest gratitude to Dead Addict for his suggestions in the development of the CMES and his effort to bring CryptoMail.org into the DefCon conference.
