CryptoMail Newsletter

Volume 1, Issue 10. April 19, 2004

CryptoMail.org publishes the CryptoMail News-letter to provide information about secure web based email communication.

Upcoming LayerOne Technical Conference

People from CryptoMail.org will present our “free software” project, the CryptoMail Email System, to the first LayerOne conference from June 12 to 13 at the Los Angeles International Airport Westin Hotel.  The main focus will be the description of the underpinnings of implementation, tactics, and cryptography in the CryptoMail Email System.

LayerOne is a technical conference for a wide range of audiences including technophiles, engineers, developers and self-proclaimed ‘geeks’.  You don’t have to be a technophile though if you have any intention to experience the CryptoMail Email System, so you should also come to the LayerOne conference.  You will have the chance to meet our chief developer, Joshua Teitelbaum and, get answers for any questions that you might have about the CryptoMail Email System.

At the conference, Joshua will explain the infrastructure and data structures of the CryptoMail Email System.  He will also illustrate the encryption layers inside the system that makes the client/server communications secure.  For anyone who has the interest to help us develop the project, this would be a great opportunity to get an overview of our design parameters and philosophy.

Our project manager, Peter Leung will also be at the conference.  Anyone who might be interested in helping CryptoMail.org will be welcomed to find out from him about our ongoing activities and projects.

To get the best deal, you should register the LayerOne conference ASAP, before May 7, to get their early bird registration discount.

Homepage’s New Browser Checker

For the regular CryptoMail users, you’ll see changes at the top right box of the CryptoMail.org’s homepage.  The box usually indicated your web browser’s compatibility with our CryptoMail Service and Email System.  Now, the box is providing more clear, and quicker indication.

Although we have made our best effort to ensure our service and email system is accessible to everyone, in order to use CryptoMail, your web browser must have certain features installed and enabled.  The purpose of having the box is to check your browser and provide a quick overview of compatibility before logging in, changing your pass phrase or signing up.

The new design uses a traffic light signal and road sign to indicate the level of compatibility between your web browser and our service and email system.  The best rating, (a green light with an arrow) means that your browser should not have any problem with our service or email system.

If you see a yellow sign with an exclamation mark, you might able to use the CryptoMail Service and Email System.  The rating is just a warning to indicate that our web browser checker could not empirically ensure that things will work.  We strongly advise you to try our service before trying to use other web browsers.  If you got the yellow sign and were able to login, we encourage you to provide information about your web browser, including your system platform, browser name and version to our webmaster, pleung at cryptomail.org.  The information that you provide will help us improve our service.

However, a red sign with a cross inside means that you might not able to use your web browser with our service and email system, because your browser does not have the necessary Java features to run the CryptoMail client, or you have disabled the Java feature.

In addition, by clicking the link in the box for more information, you get the Browser Check Information popup window.  The popup window provides details and essential information about your web browsers that we need to check for compatibility.  Using it to check out different web browsers, you will find out how our email system makes use of your web browser technology.

Corrections in Some Pages

Recently, we found some minor errors in the Server Generated Pages and the Client Referral Pages.  Those errors are related to the clarity of the message that we have tried to convey during application server responses.

The CryptoMail Newsletter is published 3 times in a year by our members.  Submissions are welcome, and you can send your submissions to our editorial director 2 weeks before our deadline for the preceding publication.
