System Requirements

CryptoMail.org develops the CryptoMail Email System to work with the fewest system requirements on almost all platforms. Because there are hundreds if not thousands of possible system configurations, CryptoMail.org cannot confirm all system requirements for all possible system configurations. If you have successfully ported the CryptoMail Server to any systems other than following, please let the author, Joshua Teitelbaum (joshuat@cryptomail.org) know.

CryptoMail Email Client (Binary Distribution)

The CryptoMail Email Client has been run on the following systems, web browsers and display screen without any problems at CryptoMail.org. You should able to run the client with at least the following:

• i586 and faster processor
• Mozilla 0.9.5 (GNU/Linux, Mac OS 8.5, Windows 95, 98, NT 4.0** and 2000)
• Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.01 and higher (Mac OS 8.0*, Windows 95, 98, NT 4.0**, 2000)
• Netscape Communicator 4.5 and higher (GNU/Linux, Mac OS 8.0*, Windows 95, 98, NT 4.0**, 2000)
• Java 1.1 or higher Runtime Environment (Java 2 Runtime Environment is limited)
• 256-color display adapter at 800x600 resolution and better
• Windows XP is not tested

* Note: If you are using Mac OS, you will need to download and install the MacOS Runtime for Java (MRJ) before running the CryptoMail Email Client. For information about how to install the MRJ, please visit the MRJ Plugin Home homepage.

** Note: If you have Windows NT 4.0 Service Pack 6 and are using Java 2 Runtime Environment with your web browser, you must upgrade your Windows NT Service Pack to 6a. This is a know issue, for more information go to Microsoft website, Knowledge Base, article Q245678.

CryptoMail Email Server (Binary Distribution)

The CryptoMail Email Server has been run on the following systems, web server, SQL server and SMTP server without any problems at CryptoMail.org. You should able to run the server with at least the following:

• i586 and faster processor
• 32 MB of RAM and more
• 1 GB of available hard disk space
• GNU/Linux Kernel 2.0.30+ * **
• Apache 1.3.9
• MySQL 10.8 Distribution 3.23.21-beta
• Sendmail 8.10.0.Beta12
• 128-Bit SSL key

CyptoMail Email System (Source Distribution)

The CryptoMail Email System requires a C compiler, a Java compiler and libraries to build the source code of the Email system. You must meet the following requirements to compile the Email system.

• GNU C compiler (GCC) Version 2.95 or higher
• MySQL C API 10.8 Distribution 3.23.21-beta or higher
• GNU Privacy Guard (GnuPG) Version 1.0.1 or higher
• Java SDK Standard Edition 1.1.1 or higher

The source distribution of the CryptoMail Email System should be able to compile and to operate successfully with MySQL and web servers on the following operating systems:

• BSD/OS BSDI 3.0, 3.1 and 4.x
• DEC Alpha UNIX 4.x
• IBM AIX 4.x
• FreeBSD 3.x and 4.x
• HP-UX 10.20 and 11.x
• GNU/Linux 2.0+ on i386, SPARC and Alpha * **
• NetBSD 1.3/1.4 on i386 and Alpha
