11. Dynamic DNS

There are various dynamic DNS services you could use. One low cost one is DNSExit.com together with the free IpUpdate client. If you register your domain with them, the DDNS service is free and the MailBackupMX is reasonable.

  • Register your domain name with www.dnsexit.com and download the IpUpdate client.
  • Extract and install to location:
    • /usr/local/bin/ipupdate
  • Edit the configuration file dnsexit.conf in the following ways:
    • login=[dnsexit username]
    • password=[dnsexit password in plain text]
    • host=www.yourdomain.net; yourdomain.net
    • proxy=yes
    • daemon=no
    • proxyservs=http://checkip.dyndns.org; http://checkip.dyndns.org:8245; http://www.dnsart.com:7777/myip.php (there are others that you could use, but whether a particular site detects your correct IP or not may depend on your ISP and geographic location)
  • Optional: Simplify naming by renaming ipUpdate.pl to ipupdate.pl
  • Test manually by running "./ipupdate.pl" from the command line
  • Configure a CRON job as root to run every 15 min with the command:
    • /usr/bin/perl /usr/local/bin/ipupdate/ipupdate.pl
